Title: Brian Heddon
Underdetermination and Evidential Support

Skeptics about objective evidential support hold either (i) that evidence
never supports a hypothesis except by entailing it, or (ii) that evidence
can support a non-entailed hypothesis, but only relative to some subjective
factor, like one's own epistemic standards. Such skeptics argue that a
relation of evidential support cannot be characterized in purely formal,
syntactic terms, and that substantive factors like the naturalness of the
properties involved in the hypothesis likewise cannot ground a relation of
evidential support. I defend objective evidential support against such
skeptical arguments, arguing that while some substantive factors (like
naturalness) are indeed ill-suited to ground a relation of evidential
support, other substantive factors are more promising. In particular,
facts about the potential explanatoriness of hypotheses can determine the
degree to which a body of evidence supports a given hypothesis, even when
the former does not entail the latter.
