Seeing as Touching: Extramission as a Model for Visual Cognition

Since the seventeenth century, the understanding of vision has been based  
on an understanding of how optical instruments bring radiant light to a  
focus, producing a sharp image. I argue that optical instruments are not a  
suitable model for perceptual cognition, and that the formation of the  
retinal image should be removed from the centre of the study of vision. The  
extramission model, whereby the eyes actually reach out to objects, tells  
us a lot more about perception than is commonly realised.
