Title: Michael Olson, Macquarie
Brain Water, a Galloping Horse, and the Unity of Consciousness
In this talk, I will argue that Kant's critical rejection of rational
psychological arguments for the simplicity and immateriality of the soul in
the Second Paralogism does not distance the doctrine of the transcendental
unity of apperception from the from the metaphysics of the rationalist
tradition as successfully as is often thought. Although Kant denies the
simplicity of the soul, the larger argument of the Critique of Pure Reason
relies on a distinction between the internal unity of the activity of
thinking and the merely external unity of the the actions of material
objects. This distinction effectively reintroduces a metaphysical--rather
than just logical or transcendental--distinction between the thinking
subject and the natural world. Consequently, I argue here, efforts to
marshal Kantian resources for contemporary materialist or naturalist
programs in philosophy of mind face an obstacle not previously acknowledged.
