Dear Colleagues,

The leading neuroscientist, Michael A. Arbib, will be presenting two talks
in the morning of Wednesday October 1st (2014), in the theatre in the
Australian Hearing Hub building at Macquarie university. Professor Arbib is
internationally recognised for his extraordinary career across
neurosciences and the spectrum of disciplines which contribute to
contemporary understanding of the human brain in its evolutionary context.
He holds 6 professorial chairs at the University of Southern California,
and heads that university's Brain project. Work with Rizzolatti on mirror
neurons has been particularly prominent in recent years, and contributes to
his 2012 O.U.P. book: *How the Brain got Language. The Mirror System
Hypothesis.* The topics of his talks are:

*9.30am*: *Comparative neuroprimatology as grounding for studying evolution
of the language-ready brain. *[Please see extended abstract (1) attached]

*10.45-11.15* Morning Tea

*11.15-12.30*: *The challenge of adapting neuroscience to the needs of
architecture *[Please see abstract (2)]

*From 12.30-3.30pm* Michael has kindly offered to stay on for a smaller
discussion group during the afternoon. This will begin with sandwiches and
coffee (courtesy again of the Dean and Faculty). For this group I can offer
each person more relevant background debate in electronic form. *Could I
request that those keen to stay on contact me so that I can prepare for the
number attending? *

It is an unusual opportunity to be part of debate around neurosciences,
human and primate evolution, linguistics, sign, architecture and the
meanings of a built environment. For contact about this event, and for
further information and background readings, please contact: A/P. David G.
