UOW Philosophy Seminar, Spring 2014. All are welcome!

Speaker: Dr. Jason Kawall (Colgate University)

Title: Epistemic Exemplars and the Epistemic Point of View

Abstract: In this paper I have two mutually-informing goals: (i) To provide
accounts of epistemically exemplary agents, and epistemic ideals, and (ii)
to defend a wide epistemic point of view that reflects and captures these
accounts. Broadly, my approach is one of attempting to achieve a
reflective equilibrium. To determine whether an agent is doing
exceptionally well epistemically, we need to have some sense of what counts
as ‘epistemic’; on the other hand, by considering intuitive cases of
epistemically exemplary agents, we can come to have a better sense of the
extent and nature of the epistemic point of view. I am thus examining
certain normative notions that seem to play important roles in ethics –
especially in virtue ethics - yet which play little role in most epistemic
thought. But equally importantly, I hope to shed light on a viable, wide
epistemic point of view – one that is broader than that embraced by many
epistemologists

When: Wednesday 3 September
Time: 3:30 - 5:00pm
Where: Building 19, room 2100

There will be a student seminar from 2:00 - 2:45pm, also in the Research
Hub.

Best,
Michael
