Is equality an independent norm for critical theory? A critical examination of Honneth’s conception of equality

In post-Rawlsian theories of justice as well as in radical-democratic political theories in the European tradition, equality is usually considered an independent norm irreducible to and indeed co-originary with the norm of freedom. Against this broad consensus, Axel Honneth has developed a critical conception of justice based on the conceptual and normative primacy of freedom over equality. As he writes in Freedom’s Right, “the notion of ‘equality’, as influential and consequential as it might be is not an independent value because it can only be understood as an elucidation of the value of individual freedom, as the notion that all members of modern societies are equally entitled to freedom”.

Jean-Philippe Deranty is Professor of philosophy at Macquarie University. He has written widely on social and political philosophy, critical theory, the history of German philosophy (especially Hegel and the Hegelian tradition), and Continental aesthetics. He is currently the Head of the Philosophy Department at Macquarie, and an editor of Critical Horizons, a journal of critical theory.
