*THE BLACKHEATH PHILOSOPHY FORUM & THE BLACKHEATH HISTORY FORUM*

    **

    *JOINT SESSION*

    **

    *Saturday, August 9 - 4pm to 6pm *

***"AUGUST 1914 -- THEN AND NOW"*

    **

To conclude its successful 2014 season, the Blackheath Philosophy
Forum is holding a joint session with the Blackheath History Forum.

The topic to be discussed is World War 1, the 100^th anniversary of
which falls on August 4, when Britain declared war on German (and
    Australia quickly followed suit).

Though primarily a historical anniversary, "The Great War" also has
    its philosophical ramifications.*

    *

It was the event that helped shape the 20th century. Ever since,
historians and political theorists have debated the circumstances
that led to the war and its aftermath. Some point to disturbing
    parallels with our own time.

*Bob Howard* (Philosophy Forum) and*Diarmuid Maguire (History
Forum)*, both lecturers in International Relations at Sydney
University, will present the topic, with the distinguished military
    historian*Robert O'Neill*as discussant.

The combined Forum will be held at the Blackheath Philosophy Forum's
usual venue in the Blackheath Community Centre, corner Gardiner
    Crescent & Great Western Highway.

$10 admission includes a substantial afternoon tea.All Welcome!
