[SydPhil] PhD scholarship at UWS in Hegel and/or Heidegger Studies - New Call

The Philosophy Research Initiative and the School of Humanities and Communication Arts at the University of Western Sydney are pleased to announce the following PhD funding opportunity.

With regards to Dr Diego Bubbio's Future Fellowship "The Quest for the 'I'. Reaching a Better Understanding of the Self Through Hegel and Heidegger", the University of Western Sydney is investing new resources by providing funding for a 3 year postgraduate stipend scholarship.

Applications are invited for this PhD scholarship, which is valued at $34,000 per annum and may be renewed for up to three years subject to satisfactory progress. Applicants must be Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or New Zealand citizens.


About the project

The 19th century philosopher G. W. F. Hegel and the 20th century philosopher M. Heidegger occupy a critical position within the history of modern attitudes to the conception of the ”I”. In line with recent reinterpretations, Diego Bubbio’s project aims at showing how the hitherto hidden “continuity” between the Hegelian idealist project and Heidegger’s conception of existence by-passes traditional oppositions between “subjective” and “objective” accounts of the “I”. It also aims at showing the relevance of this neglected approach in order to reach a greater understanding of the conception of the self and its implications, especially in relation to Australia’s capacity to interpret and engage with its culture and society. The postgraduate student is expected to produce research with a complementary yet stand-alone focus with respect to the Future Fellowship project outlined above.

Philosophy at UWS gathers and publicly disseminates the work and activities of scholars in the University of Western Sydney working in various sub-disciplines of philosophy, or in other disciplines in conversation with philosophy. The cross disciplinary conversations cut across philosophy, literature, political theory, music, history, and the visual arts. The cross-disciplinary orientation of scholars affiliated with Philosophy at UWS is anchored in, and amplified by, their institutional location in the School of Humanities and Communication Arts and Writing and Society Research Centre.

Academic Criteria

Applicants should:

  *   Hold a Bachelor Honours degree (First Class or Second Class Honours Upper Division) and/or a research  Master degree in philosophy or a related discipline, or equivalent qualifications and/or work research experience
  *   Have a background and interest in some area central to the ARC-funded project outlined above. Preferably this would be in the philosophy of Hegel and/or Heidegger, but applicants whose backgrounds are in other areas relevant to the project (e.g., Kantian or post-Kantian idealism, Husserl’s phenomenology, theory of the self) will be considered.
  *   Submit a research proposal that is complementary with the ARC-funded project outlined above.
  *   Be highly motivated to undertake philosophy research
  *   Possess excellent communication skills
  *   Demonstrate a high level of English proficiency.
