The Faculty of Law, UNSW will be hosting a workshop entitled ‘Giorgio Agamben: Government, Radical Thought, and Political Action’ on December 2nd 2013. All are welcome.

The workshop will examine the continuing contribution of Agamben’s work to legal and political thought by focusing on his recent work on government and political action, and exploring his relationship with the radical political tradition. Agamben’s analysis of sovereignty in Homo Sacer had a major influence on critical theory as it grappled with issues of security and state violence in the wake of September 11 2001. Recently, however, Agamben has turned from sovereignty to government with the publication of The Kingdom and the Glory,Opus Dei, and The Highest Poverty, with the latter of these works also developing his account of a non-sovereign politics of “use.” The workshop will explore how these analyses can contribute to thinking through questions around economy and political agency, and the renewed interest in Marxian thought, that have characterised critical theory since the Global Financial Crisis.

Presenting papers on the day are Dr. Matthew Abbott, Dr. Simone Bignall, Richard Bailey, Dr. Justin Clemens, Assoc Prof. Steven DeCaroli, Dr. Nicholas Heron, Dr. Jessica Whyte, and Prof. Miguel Vatter.

The workshop will take place from 9:30am – 5:00pm on 2 December 2013 in the Staff Common Room at the Faculty of Law, UNSW. Please RSVP by November 25 to gtcentre at unsw.edu.au<mailto:gtcentre at unsw.edu.au<mailto:gtcentre at unsw.edu.au%3cmailto:gtcentre at unsw.edu.au>.
