Rationalizing Self-Interpretation
Abstract
An intuitive metasemantic constraint is that correct semantic assignments
for a term ‘X’ must respect the subject’s ideally rational, empirically
informed verdicts about what X is. In this paper, I focus on the methods
and evidence that a rational agent should use to adjudicate among competing
answers to questions of the form, ‘what is X?’. I suggest that ideal
epistemic methods for answering such questions involve pragmatic reasoning
about one’s past representational practice of thinking about X. This
pragmatic meta-cognitive epistemology, I suggest, provides a motive for
semantic externalism and marks out a distinctively normative role for
reference.
