The School of Humanities & Languages are proud to present a seminar in the field of Philosophy presented by Dr Margaret Lange, Macquarie University

"Holism, Consequentialism and Economic Crises"
A theory of economic justice addresses those ground rules of a self-sufficient social system that dictate how property is acquired and transferred. Appealing to a broad criterion or set of criteria, such a theory describes and justifies what the rules ought to be. In this paper, I consider how conceptual features of a theory of economic justice logically determine its approach to economic crises. First, the paper introduces a number of classificatory terms. It distinguishes between deontological and consequentialist theories of economic justice.

Margaret Lange is a research associate in Philosophy at Macquarie University. She works in the field of liberal political philosophy and its critics, and is concerned to develop and defend conceptions of autonomy and of liberal institutions that can learn from and address feminist, communitarian, and environmentalist criticisms of liberalism. She is presently working with Wendy Rogers and Catriona Mackenzie to articulate the interconnections among the concepts of human vulnerability, autonomy, and justice.
