Title: Paul Dicken
What is a Content-Driven Argument for Scientific Realism?

Recent literature in the philosophy of science has been concerned with the
extent to which standard arguments for and against scientific realism are
guilty of a base-rate fallacy (e.g. Magnus and Callender, 2004). In
response, many philosophers have tried to articulate more theory-specific
arguments for scientific realism that side-step such concerns. Such a
strategy however seems to be in tension with the traditional understanding
of the scientific realism debate as the attempt to offer a second-order
evaluation of our first-order scientific practices. I illustrate this
concern with respect to proposals by Achinstein (2001), Psillos (2009) and
Saatsi (2010), and examine the prospects for a genuine content-driven
argument for scientific realism.
