Title: Ben Cross
“Liberalism and Social Perfectionism”
One of the most prevalent topics in the vast array of literature written on
liberal political philosophy is the role of perfectionism in a liberal
society. However, any such discussions of perfectionism are normally
confined to the role of political perfectionism – should the liberal state
have any role in promoting one conception of the good life over another?
There seem to me to be very few substantive discussions of the relationship
between the liberal state and what Will Kymlicka calls social
perfectionism, a term he uses to refer to those individuals, communities
and associations who pursue a particular conception of the good life
without any direct support from the exercise of political power. This
paper is an examination of this relationship. Specifically, I will argue
for two claims: first, that a liberal society is inhospitable towards
social perfectionism; second, that it is likely that this poses a problem
for the coherence of the former, but not the latter.
