The Workgroup on Recognition in Sydney continues its activities after a break. We will concentrate next on the theme of social pathologies. The first meeting is on Saturday this week, September 28, 11am-2pm at the Duck Inn Pub (74 Rose St, Chippendale).
The text to be discussed is Christopher Zurn's 'Social pathologies as second-order disorders' (in D. Petherbridge: Axel Honneth: Critical Essays, 2011, pp. 345-370), available online at: http://www.academia.edu/737275/Social_Pathologies_as_Second-Order_Disorders
For background reading, you may want to take a look also at 'Pathologies of the Social: The Past and Present of Social Philosophy' in ed. D.M. Rasmussen, Handbook of Critical Theory , Cambridge, MA,Blackwell, 1996, pp. 369–396. And if you wish, see Honneth's response to Zurn in Petherbridge 2011, p. 417f.
Anyone interested in theories of recognition, or in critical social philosophy in general (both students and staff) are warmly welcome. If you are planning to attend, please let us know in advance for table reservations. If you know anyone else who might be interested, feel free to pass on the information.
Looking forward to seeing you there,
Heikki Ikaheimo (UNSW) and Jean-Philippe Deranty (Macquarie University)
