How to Resolve the Paradox of Forgiveness

Abstract

The so-called paradox of forgiveness is this: Forgiveness is possible only  
when the victim of wrongdoing judges that resentment of the perpetrator is  
warranted. (This is required if we are to distinguish forgiving from  
excusing or justifying.) But if the victim judges that her resentment is  
warranted, then she judges that she ought not forgive. Thus, forgiveness is  
always irrational. In this paper I will assess Kolnai's and Zaibert's  
attempts to resolve this "paradox", and will offer an alternative  
resolution that utilises a quasi-epistemic notion of the fittingness of an  
emotion.
