Title: Peter Anstey (University of Sydney)
Moral evaluation and the trumping fallacy.
Abstract
This paper presents a theory of first order moral evaluation. The theory,
it is claimed, is intuitively plausible, empirically tractable and
revisable. As such it raises a problem for many normative ethical theories.
The problem arises from the fact that proponents of normative theories,
such as act utilitarianism, tend to justify their normative principles on
the basis of cases of moral evaluation. The theory of moral evaluation
presented here implies that this cannot be done. The implications of the
theory for virtue ethics and moral particularism are also explored.
