Abstract

This talk will apply the 'sender-receiver' approach to semantic phenomena  
(Lewis, Skyrms) to questions about the origins of symbolic behavior in  
human pre-history. Archaeologists and anthropologists thinking about the  
origins of human culture often draw on C.S. Peirce's theory of signs.  
Recent philosophical work may be able to provide them with a better  
framework.
