Professor Douglas Moggach (University of Ottawa)

Perfectionism, Before and After Kant

This paper examines debates surrounding the emergence of the Kantian juridical subject against the background of the perfectionist ethical doctrines of Leibniz and Wolff, and the subsequent development of these up to the 1790's. It contends that the Kantian distinctions among welfare, right, and virtue, while supplanting old-style eudaimonistic theories, are reconfigured in post-Kantian thought as a perfectionist ethic of a new kind, intended to promote the conditions for the practice of freedom. Two variants will be outlined, in Schiller and Bruno Bauer.

Professor Douglas Moggach teaches in Philosophy at the University of Ottawa, and holds the University Research Chair in Political Thought. He published on Hegel, Hegelianism, Politics, Religion and Modernity. His current research concerns aesthetics and politics.
