Title: Fundamentality and the Magnets of Meaning

‘Magnetism’ circumscribes a family of metasemantic views. Common to these  
views is the following thesis: the eligibility of a certain thing X to be  
the meaning of a given expression E is partly determined by features of X  
that are independent of E-users. Magnetism thus confers an external  
constraint on meaning. In this talk I outline a framework through which to  
think about the relationship between semantic theories and metasemantic  
theories, and the relationship between internal and external constraints.  
Using the framework, I propose a condition to be met by metasemantic  
theories if any external constraint is to be plausible. I then give reasons  
to think that the condition is not met by particular varieties of  
magnetism—varieties to which the notion of fundamentality (or its kin) is  
central.
