Title: The Commitments of 'Reason'

Sometimes I say that I reject morality; this talk is an attempt to make
precise what I mean when I say this. It is a certain conception of
objectivity that I reject. Setting aside whatever norms are required to be
a thinker at all, I think that all normativity arises out of shared
practices, forms of life or whatever favoured theoretical terms one
prefers. It must be, then, that there cannot be norms with the kind of
universal grip ("'shoulds' that call to every ear") that many philosophers
believe there are. (Even if this is only because of the contingent fact
that there is no practice of the right kind shared by all rational beings.)
Nonetheless people (especially the mentioned philosophers) continue to
insist that sometimes a person has a reason to do something, no matter
which desires that person has. This is something I believe too. I will
outline three different kinds of thing one might be doing in saying that
someone has a reason to do something. It turns out that these three kinds
of thing are well known positions from the literature, with prominent
figures defending each of them. I will mention, en passant, which of the
views is mine (an essentially Blackburnian view) and hopefully have time to
engage with one of the two views I reject by arguing against Michael Smith.
