Getting lost in the woods: logical approaches to confusion and collapse

Abstract

Confusion, of the kind I'm concerned with, is what happens when we treat
two or more things as though they were one. Although it's essentially the
reverse of the Hesperus/Phosphorus phenomenon explored by Frege, it has
received much less philosophical attention. In this talk, I'll explore a
few examples of confusion, and try to give a sense of the phenomenon. I'll
argue that confusion is not always a bad idea; sometimes it's good to be
confused. I'll consider two existing attempts to use logical tools to
understand confusion, due to Field and Camp, and argue that neither of them
succeeds in grappling with the phenomenon; both are, in the end, confusing
confusion with something else. Finally, I'll propose a novel logical
approach to confusion, based on what I'll call "collapse", and explore some
of its features.
