Kant on Purpose and Mechanical Inexplicability

Abstract

Over the last decade, there has been an increase of interest in Kant’s  
notion of teleology, and particularly his claim that certain entities must  
be judged teleologically. Which entities does Kant mean, and why does he  
consider them “inexplicable” on the principles of mechanism? Although these  
two questions have been at the centre of a lively debate, the various  
answers proposed have largely ignored two key aspects of Kant’s project:  
his notion of matter, and his conception of scientific explanation. This  
paper will account for these two central ideas in Kant’s understanding of  
purpose (teleology) and mechanism, and thereby shed light on the aims of  
the Critique of Judgment, and on Kant’s views regarding the meaning of the  
life sciences.
