Living with Blame

Blame is a pervasive moral-psychological phenomenon that presents philosophers with a normative dilemma.  On the one hand, reacting negatively to wrongdoing seems an important feature of what we owe to one another as members of a moral community. On the other hand, there are characteristic features of blame (an angry punitiveness) that make it normatively suspect.  In this talk, I review two standard responses to this dilemma that are as opposed in their methodological commitments as they are in their substantive conclusions.  I find both responses dissatisfying, arguing for a third way forward that avoids the methodological deficiencies of the previous responses and is substantively more rewarding.
