Anti Anti-Essentialism
Anti-essentialism has become the default stance for much, if not all critical inquiry, today. In this paper, I identify the limitations of this stance, and how it has come to function as a blockage to thinking anew some of the most urgent questions of our time. The upshot of the argument is not that we need to revert to essentialist assumptions, but that we need to go beyond the essentialist/anti-essentialist binary.

Nikolas Kompridis is a Professorial Fellow in the School of Humanities & Communication Arts, specialising in Philosophy and Political Thought, and a member of the Executive Committee of the Institute for Democracy and Human Rights at the University of Sydney. He is the author of Critique and Disclosure: Critical Theory between Past and Future (MIT Press, 2006), and editor of Philosophical Romanticism (Routledge, 2006) and The Aesthetic Turn in Political Thought (Continuum, 2012).
