Hi Bruce,

Glad the documentation helps. I’ll ask one of our Research Assistants to start a Troubleshooting or FAQ section to the GPlates documentation. I think that might be helpful. Let me know if there’s anything I can help you with.

Cheers,
Sabin

Hi John and Sabin
Thanks for the suggestions and notes. Sabin, if these are not already part of the GPlates documentation, they ought to be. Great job summarizing what to watch out for, even if newer versions of the software will be more tolerant. I am working at isolating the issue, based on your notes and will get back to you.

Hi Bruce,

Sabin's trouble-shooting article is definitely the way to go for your problem (in GPlates 1.5 and earlier).

And, as Sabin mentions, GPlates 2.0 will fix a lot of these problems. And will also support self-intersecting and donut polygons. And will link up much faster (when you connect raster to polygons layer). It will be out November for sure.

In the meantime, as Sabin mentioned, if you can isolate one problem polygon then Sabin or I can verify it offline with a pre-2.0 build.

Regards,
John

Hi Bruce,

Hope you’ve been well!

It could be something to do with the polygons, I’ve had similar issues in the past – although John has worked really hard on fixing those issues and has immensely improved how GPlates handles certain polygons.

As you mention, Repair Geometry in ArcGIS is very helpful as it deleted features with Null geometries, and also fixes self-intersecting polygons. If you have very detailed polygons, say that have points so close to each other that GPlates thinks the polygon is self-intersecting, then this might cause some issues, although John has definitely fixed many aspects of this. Make sure that your polygons don’t have duplicate Feature Ids. This happens when you save out polygons from GPlates, and then cut them into sub-components in ArcGIS, leading to each portion of the polygon having the same Feature ID.

Can you confirm that you have the latest version of GPlates (1.5) installed? Also, it might be best to isolate one polygon that triggers the problem, and you can send it to me offline, and I can have a look at it. If it’s to do with the raster, it might be to do with the resolution of the file. I attach an OLD troubleshooting file I wrote up, which was before many of the fixes that John implemented, but it could be worthwhile having a look at some of the issues (especially if your polygons are not WGS84 or might have geometries beyond the geographic range).

Cheers,
Sabin

Subject: [GPlates-discuss] Problem linking raster to polygon file

Hi
I have a raster image which I need to connect to a reconstructed polygon but every time I try, GPlates freezes. I can make the connection for the same raster with another, simpler raster so I presume that the issue has to do with the polygon shapefile. Further checks demonstrate that the issue only relates to my collection of polygons for Antarctica. Can anybody suggest what I should check for. I have performed a Repair Geometry and Check Geometry in ArcGIS with no issues noted.

Regards
  Bruce
