[Geodynamics] Call for Abstracts AGU26 Session - S009: A multi-disciplinary perspective of the Southwest Pacific subduction zones

Dear colleagues,
We would like to draw your attention to the following session: A multi-disciplinary perspective of the Southwest Pacific subduction zones at the AGU Fall Meeting 2026 (7-11 December, San Francisco, California).
This session will focus on the full-spectrum of subductions processes (subduction initiation, intermediate-deep earthquake, plume-slab interaction, polarity reversal, eclogite exhumation) and the Southwest Pacific subduction zones as a natural laboratory.
We encourage multi-disciplinary (geophysics, geochemistry, petrology, structural geology, natural hazard and society) contributions from observations to machine learning analysis related to the Southwest Pacific subduction zones.
We would be pleased if you will consider submitting your abstract to our session.

Session description
Subduction zones drive plate tectonics, regulate long-term climate through deep volatile cycling. Southwest Pacific is the ideal laboratory to study the full-spectrum of the subduction processes (subduction initiation, intermediate-deep earthquake, plume-slab interaction, polarity reversal, eclogite exhumation) in a complex plate boundary zone. Recent deployment of broadband OBS in the Tonga-Samoa region and Matthew-Hunter zone will provide new seismic imaging (surface and body waves models, seismic anisotropy patterns) of these regions. The development of OBS seismic phase pickers provides a unique opportunity to revise earthquake catalogs and slab geometries. New numerical simulations framework gives an opportunity to revise our knowledge on subduction processes. This session aims to discuss the SW Pacific subduction zones from a multi-disciplinary approach (geophysics, geochemistry, geomorphology, numerical modelling) to attempts to reconcile observations from different fields. We invite contributions from colleagues working on Papua New Guinea, Matthew-Hunter zone, Vanuatu, Tonga-Samoa-Lau basin, Kermadec subduction zone or Puysegur trench.
