The abstract submission deadline is 15 Jan 2020. Session description:*__* /The thermochemical structure of Earth mantle is key information to better understand its dynamics and its evolution in time. In the last 20 years, several approaches were suggested from seismological observations, experimental geophysics, and computational geochemistry to improve our understanding of the thermochemical structure beneath cratonic areas, subduction zones or mantle upwellings. The development of high-performance computational infrastructures (HPCI) and new algorithms to manage the processing of big data brings new opportunities to produce high-resolution images and a better understanding of mantle dynamics. This session wishes to bring together contributions from experimental geophysics and computational geochemistry to large scale geodynamics, which is aimed at imaging and modelling thermochemical structure on different time scales. Presentations of new methods combining multiple observations of geophysical and geochemical datasets with regional to global geophysical modelling are particularly encouraged/.? This is the first time these two groups have come together for a joint meeting, a historical step in the right direction! Especially students and ECR?s should consider attending. As for our more senior colleagues, please consider nominations for the Chris Powell Medal and the Bruce Hobbs medal. The Chris Powell medal is awarded for an outstanding research paper arising from postgraduate research on some aspect of structural geology or tectonics. The paper must be published at the time of nomination, the research it describes must have been undertaken as part of a postgraduate research degree (Honours, Masters or PhD), and the nominee must either still be a postgraduate student, or have completed their postgraduate degree no more than three years before the closing date for nominations. The nominee must be first author of the paper and must be responsible for a substantial portion of the content. The Bruce Hobbs medal is awarded for excellent contributions to structural geology. Contributions may relate to any aspect of structural geology including field-based structural analyses, microstructural studies, experimental work, computer and analogue modelling of deformation, and regional structural syntheses. Nominees must be members of the SGTSG and preference will be given to Australian citizens. Any member may nominate another member for consideration by a written submission, which may be used as a basis for citation. Nominations will be assessed on the quality of scientific contribution rather than the age or experience of nominees. The choice of recipient is at the sole discretion of the SGTSG Executive Committee, who also reserve the right to not to make an award. See email below for more details. Dear Colleagues, Happy New Year! Since the EGU abstract deadline is approaching fast, we would like to draw again your attention to our session at the EGU General Assembly (May 3-7, 2020) entitled ?Lithospheric localization processes across scales: from fault dynamics to plate boundary formation and evolution??(GD9/TS2). The session is detailed here below. If you are interested in it, please consider submitting an abstract before the deadline, which is on 15th January 2020 (13h CET). Looking forward to meeting you in Vienna! Sincerely, Ma?lis, Lukas, Whitney and Eline __________________________ Session description: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/wUVQC6X13Rt4ArLLhpubCb?domain=meetingorganizer.copernicus.org Conveners: Lukas Fuchs, Ma?lis Arnould, Whitney Behr, Eline Le Breton. This year?s keynote speaker is Manon Bickert, IPGP, France. In the Plate Tectonics theory, Earth?s lithosphere is described as a rigid outermost shell deforming over long timescales along narrow boundaries, that play a central role in our Planet?s thermal and dynamic evolution. Understanding the modalities of strain localization in the lithosphere and its failure are therefore essential to describe the formation and evolution of plate boundaries, fault zones and other mechanical heterogeneities. This requires knowledge of localization processes at both micro- and macro-physical scales, the analysis of their dynamics over various time scales, and involves complementary inputs from geological and seismic observations, laboratory experiments and numerical and analog modeling. We welcome multidisciplinary contributions that will collaboratively help to build a unified view on the dynamical evolution of lithospheric localization processes. Example topics include but are certainly not limited to the study of variations in lithospheric properties deduced from mineralogical, petrological or geological data, and of the implication of lithospheric anomalies on the dynamics of fault zones and the formation and evolution of plate margins in nature or in models.
