[Geodynamics] FW: `Convergence on the Coast`, the biennial meeting of the SGTSG and SGSEG, Port Lincoln, Australia

Hi all,

I encourage you to attend the Biennial meeting of the Geological Society of Australia’s SGTSG<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/msEFCP7yOZt8nBOJtzzkQ-?domain=sgtsg.org> and SGSEG<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/4rQzCQnzP0tMLn8JhPvZTP?domain=gsa.org.au> groups in Port Lincoln this November.  This is the first time these two groups have come together for a joint meeting, a historical step in the right direction!

Especially students and ECR’s should consider attending. As for our more senior colleagues, please consider nominations for the Chris Powell Medal and the Bruce Hobbs medal.

The Chris Powell medal is awarded for an outstanding research paper arising from postgraduate research on some aspect of structural geology or tectonics. The paper must be published at the time of nomination, the research it describes must have been undertaken as part of a postgraduate research degree (Honours, Masters or PhD), and the nominee must either still be a postgraduate student, or have completed their postgraduate degree no more than three years before the closing date for nominations. The nominee must be first author of the paper and must be responsible for a substantial portion of the content.

The Bruce Hobbs medal is awarded for excellent contributions to structural geology. Contributions may relate to any aspect of structural geology including field-based structural analyses, microstructural studies, experimental work, computer and analogue modelling of deformation, and regional structural syntheses. Nominees must be members of the SGTSG and preference will be given to Australian citizens. Any member may nominate another member for consideration by a written submission, which may be used as a basis for citation. Nominations will be assessed on the quality of scientific contribution rather than the age or experience of nominees. The choice of recipient is at the sole discretion of the SGTSG Executive Committee, who also reserve the right to not to make an award.

    Registration is now open for the 2019 Biennial meeting of the SGTSG (Specialist Group in Tectonics ans Structural Geology) and SGSEG (Specialist Group in Solid Earth Geophysics), themed `Convergence at the Coast`. This is also the first call for abstracts.

    Events

    There are a number of planned field trips, workshops and social events associated with the conference.

    •       Pre-conference Field Trip: Lithospheric structures, orogenic fronts and mineral systems: a traverse through the south-eastern Gawler Craton. Wed 13th - Sun 17th November 2019

    •       Mid-conference field trip: One day field trip on Wednesday 20th November, visiting the spectacular local coastal outcrops of the Southern Gawler Craton

    •       Post-conference Field Trip: Tectonics, magmatism and crustal growth in the southern Gawler Craton. Sat 23rd – Wed 27th November 2019

    •       Free Loop 3D modelling workshop: Loop is a new platform that will enable field geologists, researchers from academia and government organisations, explorers, resource modellers & managers to better define their 3D geological environment as well as assessing the requirement for optimised additional data/knowledge acquisition. The platform will be Open Source, scalable and applicable to problems from the mine-scale to the plate-scale, in data-rich and poor environment. It will serve to solve problems related to urban geology, basins resources exploration and exploitation as well as minerals and scientific exploration in poly-deformed metamorphosed terranes.

    •       Conference dinner and awards night: Wednesday 20th of November at the stunning Line and Label Restaurant, featuring local beer and wines as well as a selection of canapés and a seafood paella, cooked and served by their award winning chefs and featuring all local produce.

    The conference program will be built around a number of themes, headlined by an invited keynote speaker. This year the SGTSG and SGSEG committees have tried to balance the invited speakers between established experts and up-and-coming ECR/MCR researchers. We are happy to announce the following confirmed themes and keynotes.
