Dear all,

we are looking for a motivated postdoc as part of a multi-disciplinary project on continental break-up, the formation of oceanic gateways, and its impact on paleo-ocean circulation. This subproject focusses on numerically modelling the bathymetric evolution during and after break-up using the geodynamic modelling software ASPECT. The postdoc will be based in Hobart, Australia, but we envisage an extensive initial stay at GFZ Potsdam, Germany. The position is funded for 2 years and the application deadline is 10th of June.

The detailed job advert can be found online at http://careers.utas.edu.au/cw/en/job/492630/geodynamic-modeller <http://careers.utas.edu.au/cw/en/job/492630/geodynamic-modeller> or pasted below. Please feel free to forward this mail to anyone that might be interested.

Kind regards,
Sascha

Apply nowJob no: 492630
Work type: Full time
Location: Hobart
Categories: Academic - Research Focus

We are looking to hire a geodynamic modeller. This position will be within the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies. The two-year, research intensive position is funded through an Australian Research Council Discovery grant investigating the complexity of continental breakup controls on ocean circulation.

This role will involve geodynamic modelling of the thermomechanical evolution of the lithosphere during seaway formation using the open-source community code ASPECT. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the international, multidisciplinary team (GFZ Potsdam, British Antarctic Survey, University of Sydney and University of Oslo) that spans paleoceanography/paleoclimate as well as lithosphere dynamics, with the expectation that results will be published in high-quality journals. There will be funded opportunities to travel both for research collaboration to GFZ Potsdam, Germany and to present at international conferences.

In the role you will:

	• Undertake ground-breaking research using geodynamic models of the thermomechanical evolution of the lithosphere during rifting and seaway formation.
	• Communicate research findings via high quality publications, conference presentations, and outreach activities.
	• Contribute to the development and maintenance of productive and effective links with the researchers and students involved in the project, locally, nationally and internationally.
	• Contribute to the successful supervision of research higher degree students.
You will be employed on a Fixed Term (2 years), Full Time basis.

To be considered, you will have:

	• A PhD or equivalent in geodynamics, geophysics, geology, or another relevant field.
	• Experience with numerical modelling (e.g. ASPECT).
	• Experience with scientific programming (e.g. C++).
	• Demonstrated high-level English language oral and written communication skills.
	• Demonstrated willingness and capacity to work in a team environment.
Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level B and will have a total remuneration package of up to $127,369 comprising base salary within the range of $92,326 to $108,862 plus 17% superannuation.
