Dear friends and colleagues,

On behalf of session convenors, may I draw to your attention the following AGU 2017 Fall Meeting session:

T039: Tectonic history of the Western Americas, Eastern Pacific Ocean and Caribbean and Scotia Seas from integration of tomographic and geologic studies

Session Description:
Tectonic reconstructions have relied for decades on often incomplete, or missing, surficial, geologic, and paleomagnetic records of past plate motions. This session invites contributions of tomographic, slab-based reconstructions which integrate geologic and paleomagnetic observations from the area of the eastern and northeastern Pacific Ocean, western Americas, Caribbean, and Scotia Seas. For the Caribbean and Scotia Seas, tomographic mapping of subducted slabs offers new constraints on whether these controversial small plates formed in situ by rift processes or were inserted as Pacific-derived arc systems as first proposed by J.T. Wilson in 1966. Other important topics relating geology and tomography include the Yakutat block of Alaska, accretion history of terranes of of the western Americas and Caribbean, and the origin of the Laramide orogeny.

Confirmed invited speakers:
Mitch Mihalynuk, BC Geological Survey - “Tomotectonic constraints on assembly and deformation of Cordilleran North America since Pangea breakup"
Lydian Boschman, Utrecht University - "Absolute plate motion control since the Triassic from the Cocos slab and its associated subduction record in Mexico"
