I’m still on a high after last night’s Eureka Prizes. Congratulations to all the winners and finalists<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/E2isCZY1Nqixo4XwrhysVViB4-0K?domain=us.list-manage.com>. In particular, STA Board Director, former Superstar of STEM and University of Tasmania neuroscientist, Dr Lila Landowski who won the Celestino Eureka Prize for Promoting Understanding of Science. And to Associate Professor Karen Lamb from the University of Melbourne who was in the first cohort of Superstars of STEM in 2017. She won the University of Sydney Eureka Prize for Leadership in Science. Thank you for your incredible expertise, creativity and determination to make our world a better place.

Only a couple of days since opening, registrations are starting to fill up for our first Science Meets the Economy<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/dxyOC1WLPxcOEzL02IYtppiVjfdo?domain=us.list-manage.com> cohort. I am so thrilled to see this generational change program come to life. Providing world-class professional development is part of STA’s core mission. And, with the release of the Ambitious Australia report<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/O0GXC2xMQzi6El04PiMu33i5eo-D?domain=us.list-manage.com>, equipping leaders in STEM with the skills to provide their expertise to business has never been more relevant. If you are a STEM sector leader currently in, or aspiring to, executive or strategic leadership roles then this program could be for you.

Speaking of the Ambitious Australia report, we saw some movement this week as the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) met for the final time. It was encouraging to see<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/DETMC3QNPBixRAWP6hYCZZiQO8ov?domain=us.list-manage.com> Minister Tim Ayres highlighting the importance of independent scientific advice, a role that would be continued when the National Resilience and Science Council (NRSC) is established. We look forward to the NRSC taking up the mantle and supporting the next steps of implementingAmbitious Australia<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/xuenC4QOPEi670RnMiNFGGi4bYB4?domain=us.list-manage.com>.

Development of the National Research Infrastructure Roadmap is another piece of that puzzle. The Department of Education is expecting to release<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/BwXkC5QPXJiRWjwz5I4HqqikzQ9F?domain=us.list-manage.com> an Exposure Draft around mid-September. And we will be holding some workshops for STA members, to feed into this process. Details and registration links will be shared soon.

Hundreds of researchers across all disciplines and in various organisation types have already completed our National AI in Research Survey<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/zm6mC6XQ4LfMGOZgjsjI77i5dbmm?domain=us.list-manage.com>. If you’re not one of them, please don’t miss this opportunity to help shape AI policy and investments, which are still in a state of development in Government. Reflecting this, the survey has been developed in consultation with the ARC, NHMRC and Office of AI in the Department of the Prime Minister & Cabinet. Thanks to our colleagues at the MetaMelb Research Group at the University of Melbourne who are supporting us to collect and analyse the data.

Wrapping up policy highlights, STA continues to engage with advocacy relevant to R&D funding and the STEM skills pipeline. In addition to participating in ongoing discussions on RDTI reforms, we are also getting ready to speak to the Joint Standing Committee on Migration next week to give further evidence as part of its inquiry into the value of skilled migration to Australia.

Science Meets the Economy registrations are open
