Dear astronomy community
You are all aware of the increasingly challenging situation for optical astronomy in Australia, particularly in relation to access to key facilities and the long-term sustainability of our observational capability.
This is part of a broader trend affecting the Australian research system. The Australian Academy of Science is currently running its Restore Science<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/uZFYCP7LAXfoE43xXuzf2fxi6jS?domain=restorescience.com.au> campaign, which is calling for sustained investment in national research capability, which includes the infrastructure and international partnerships that underpin fields like astronomy.
One of the most effective things you can do as a member of the community is to write to your local MP and explain why this matters, both for astronomy specifically and for Australia’s broader scientific capability.
The Academy has provided a simple tool to make this easy: https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/uZFYCP7LAXfoE43xXuzf2fxi6jS?domain=restorescience.com.au/
These messages can make a real difference, particularly if they draw on your experience of how current pressures are affecting your work and the field more broadly.
Thank you for considering this and for everything you are doing to support astronomy in Australia.
Please be in touch with me or restore at science.org.au<mailto:restore at science.org.au> for more information.
Kind regards
Meaghan
