Dear ASA Colleagues,
As we approach the end of the financial tax year this month, I would like to bring to your attention that the Astronomical Society of Australia (ASA) has established the Foundation for the Advancement of Astronomy (FAA) — a tax-deductible foundation that strengthens the ASA’s efforts to promote astronomy and related fields in Australia, and to recognise and support excellence in those fields.
The FAA’s purposes are broadly defined, allowing support for prizes, scholarships, research, and facilities. The FAA funds all ASA prizes. Donors may choose to support a specific prize or activity, or contribute to the FAA’s general purposes.
Where your donation can be directed
* The Bok Prize<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/J80hCNLJyQUEqwl0QumfJcyHssN?domain=asa.astronomy.org.au> — outstanding research in astronomy by an Honours student
* The Charlene Heisler Prize<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/nGn2COMKzVT0LERpguvhJcGG0tT?domain=asa.astronomy.org.au> — most outstanding PhD thesis in Astronomy (or closely related field)
* The Anne Green Prize<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/n-pkCP7LAXfo1JGK2u1i1cxZXXS?domain=asa.astronomy.org.au> — significant advance or accomplishment by a mid-career scientist
* The Louise Webster Prize<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/23moCQnMBZf31JAkKFksocGm9yj?domain=asa.astronomy.org.au> — outstanding research by an early postdoctoral scientist
* The Emerging Leaders Software Development Prize<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/pf8gCROND2uRDymvpHqtnc15Zm3?domain=asa.astronomy.org.au> — outstanding open-source astronomical software contribution by an ECR (choose General Fund and specify “Software Prize” in the comments)
* The Peter McGregor Prize<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/Xg98CVARKgC5nzwxEsku1cEeGlV?domain=asa.astronomy.org.au> — exceptional achievement or innovation in astronomical instrumentation
* Gascoigne Funds — supports the Ellery Lectureship<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/QSfACWLVXkUPLN95Qs1CLcoYcpS?domain=asa.astronomy.org.au> for outstanding contributions in astronomy or related fields
* The David Allen Prize<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/sPErCXLW2mUqPk5XguMFncWwt7r?domain=asa.astronomy.org.au> — best accessible media contribution(s) from the previous calendar year portraying an astronomical theme in an exciting and educative way
* The Bearnice and Arthur Page Medal<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/IjF0CYW8NocNWj1Lvs2H5cxSKgI?domain=asa.astronomy.org.au> — excellence in amateur astronomy
* The Harley Wood Fund — supports the Harley Wood School of Astronomy<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/ooOtCZY1NqiDqX45wHJIwcB_RM0?domain=asa.astronomy.org.au>
* The Richard Cole Fund<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/e-5GC1WLPxckALzM0hWSKcViCT_?domain=asa.astronomy.org.au> — supports ASA activities for students
* General Fund (specify “No Preference” in the comments when donating)
The ASA also welcomes suggestions for other initiatives.
Note: To comply with its tax-deductible status, the FAA makes its funds available through Educational Institutions, Scientific Institutions, and other Eligible Institutions, and must incur expenditure principally within Australia.
Please support Australian Astronomy
The FAA’s ability to sustain and diversify these activities depends on the level of funding available — and on the support of ASA members and the wider public. Your support is essential to help the FAA continue developing a significant role in Australian astronomy.
Donations of $2 or more are tax deductible for Australian taxpayers.
How to donate
* ASA members can donate at any time (including when paying annual ASA membership).
* Members of the public are also very welcome to donate.
* To make an online payment, please go to the FAA Donation page<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/pE0vC2xMQziR20lp4H8TJc5T-UW?domain=asa.wildapricot.org>.
* If you would like to discuss a donation, or donate via a method other than credit card, please contact the ASA Treasurer<mailto:asa.treasurer at sydney.edu.au>.
Thank you for considering supporting Australian astronomy in this way.
Kind regards,
Richard
