Dear colleagues,

Please see below the call for community input for ALMA2040 white papers. Please note that you do not need to be in an ESO member state to contribute.

Best regards,
Elisabete

Subject: Call for Community Input: ALMA2040 White Papers

Dear colleagues,

(Apologies if you receive this message via multiple channels.)

I wanted to share a brief update on the ALMA2040 effort, which is being developed in the context of ESO’s Expanding Horizons process to define the next major ground-based facility for the 2040s.

Following an initial European call for ideas last year, which led to a broad set of science cases and White Papers submitted to ESO, we are now moving into the next phase: developing a more coordinated set of scientific and technical White Papers, supported by simulations, that will form the basis of a reference concept for a next-generation mm/submm interferometric facility.

We are now opening this up more broadly and would really welcome input from across the community — both in terms of helping to develop existing topics and bringing forward additional strong ideas. It would be great to have your perspective represented in this process.

The current timeline is:

15 May 2026 — Deadline for proposing new topics and/or expressing interest in (co-)leading White Papers
June–September 2026 — White Paper development
20 September 2026 — White Paper submission deadline

Further details, including how to get involved, are available here:

Please feel free to share this within your networks as well. We are aiming to build a strong and broadly supported concept for a next-generation mm/submm interferometric facility, and broad community input will be key.

Best regards on behalf of the ALMA2040 SC,
Jackie
