Dear colleagues,

many of you will be familiar with the Pimbblet et al. (2011) paper “The h-index in Australian Astronomy” that is used by some members of our community to benchmark their publication track record.
https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/PjkVCQnMBZf3gROgWUxf6TGNFT6?domain=ui.adsabs.harvard.edu

Since 2011, publication practices in our field have evolved substantially, meaning that the data presented in this paper is no longer representative. Despite the many limitations (and hidden biases) of publication metrics, many people still find it useful to benchmark their publications, in particular, in contexts like ARC grant applications.

Hence, we thought it would be useful to redo and update the analysis so that it is relevant to the current context. As with the first analysis we are using the ASA membership list as a convenient way of defining the Australian Astronomy community at the current point in time.

We are doing our analysis in a semi-automatic way using public information from ADS/SciExplorer. The most significant challenge is disambiguating individuals with non-unique names. Hence to assist this project it would be useful to collect curated publication lists (via ADS, ORCID or Scopus) from anyone who would like to contribute them.

If you would like to contribute a curated list of your publications, please submit them via this link:

As a side note, if you are an active researcher and do not have an ORCID, it is easy (and beneficial) to set one up here: https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/Kyw0CVARKgC5mZ3mAHyiATEJ_ur?domain=orcid.org
“ORCID is a free, unique, persistent identifier (PID) for individuals to use as they engage in research, scholarship, and innovation activities.”

As a second side note, if you have a PhD, you might find it useful to add yourself to the AstroGen project, which is a family tree of PhD astronomers, run by the American Astronomical Society: https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/r1YuCWLVXkUPZ4OZBHnsQToVz1F?domain=astrogen.aas.org

Please let us know if you have any feedback on this project,

Tara Murphy and Kevin Pimbblet
