27 March 2026
Dear Richard,
I am still on a high after two full days of Science Meets Parliament 2026. It was our biggest SMP to date. More than 400 delegates descended on Parliament House, and we held around 100 meetings with parliamentarians.
We started the event with the launch of Science Meets the Economy<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/LL3ACROND2uRnlBmWCOs1S1SMGG?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com>, our response to the Ambitous Australia<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/r4eeCVARKgC50K9wyhQtpSEkA0b?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com> report. Later this year, STA will pilot the new program, which will equip STEM professionals with an understanding of the business world and the economy, enabling them to translate science and evidence in meaningful ways for businesses. I encourage you to click the link above and register your interest to receive updates.
Science Meets Parliament continued with a rich day of presentations and panel discussions, the National Press Club Address with the Minister for Science, Senator the Hon Tim Ayres. He told us he is ambitious for reform and is looking for a whole-of-government response to Ambitious Australia. We are looking forward to working with the Government to make the most of this opportunity.
That evening we heard from the Shadow Minister Aaron Violi MP who spoke of his aspirations, including the need for Australian R&D to solve Australian challenges. He spoke of the value of science in the good and hard times, reflecting on an amazing Swinburne University trained female chemical engineer who helped to address paper supply chain issues during World War 2, and knows that she will be looking down proudly at her grandson who is now the Shadow Minister for Science.
