OFFICIAL
Dear Colleagues
Members of the Australian astronomical community are invited to nominate for positions on the Australia Telescope User Committee (ATUC) and Time Allocation Committee (TAC) of CSIRO’s Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF).
CSIRO strives for diverse and inclusive representation in all its activities, including ATUC and TAC membership. We welcome applications from all our users and encourage anyone from a currently under-represented group to submit an expression of interest as we would greatly value their input in shaping the future of ATNF and acknowledge the historical absence of those perspectives.
Please find below an outline of the vacant positions and a brief summary of each committee.
Australia Telescope User Committee (ATUC)
ATUC is a group of ten to fifteen scientists, including two student members, that represents the users of the Australia Telescope National Facility. ATUC meetings include an open forum held in-person and online for all ATNF users to raise any problems they have experienced with the operation of the facilities and to suggest changes to their operation: this discussion provides feedback for the ATNF management. ATUC meetings also includes a closed session for the committee members to discuss and recommend priorities for ATNF future development plans. The ATUC meets twice a year, usually in April and October. Members are appointed for a term of three years, with student members appointed for one year (two meetings). New members will join ATUC from the October 2026 meeting. We welcome Expressions of Interest from researchers who make use of our facilities to join this committee.
In response to the increasing use of our facilities by international users, we are seeking to capture the overseas perspective. We therefore invite Expressions of Interest from international colleagues to provide written input in advance of the ATUC meeting. There would be no expectation for these contributors to attend the meeting in person, though attendance (online or in-person) is encouraged – as it is for all ATNF users.

ATNF Time Assignment Committee (TAC):
The TAC is the committee that reviews and grades proposals for time on Murriyang, the Parkes radio telescope; the Australia Telescope Compact Array; the Long Baseline Array; host country time on antennas of the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex at Tidbinbilla; and Guest Science Projects on the ASKAP radio telescope. The TAC meets twice a year, generally in February and July. Members are appointed for a term of three years. We welcome Expressions of Interest from researchers across all fields and would particularly encourage applications from those with expertise in the fields of pulsars, transients, VLBI and HI to join the committee from their meeting in July 2026.

Next steps
Nominees are asked to send their name, affiliation, and a < 100-word summary of their specialisation to Amanda Gray (Amanda.Gray at csiro.au<mailto:Amanda.Gray at csiro.au>) by COB AWST on Friday, 13 March 2026. Please include in the subject line of your email which committee you are interested in.
The ATUC and the TAC are sub-committees of the Australia Telescope Steering Committee<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/QbQXCJyBrGfAJ1QmpuzivIySRd7?domain=atnf.csiro.au> (ATSC). At its May meeting, the ATSC will review nominations for membership, taking into consideration the range of specialisations and experience required for effective operation of its sub-committees.
For further information, please contact George Hobbs (George.Hobbs at csiro.au<mailto:George.Hobbs at csiro.au>).
Regards,
Douglas
