Applications close: 20 October 2025

The ESO research studentship programme <https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/UbarCgZ0N1iGXV7WpU2izt4ZoUx?domain=eso.org> provides an outstanding opportunity for PhD students to experience the exciting scientific environment at one of the world's leading observatories. ESO's studentship positions are open to students enrolled in a university PhD programme in astronomy or related fields. Students accepted into the programme work on their doctoral project under the formal supervision of their home university supervisor, but they come to ESO to work and study under the co-supervision of an ESO staff astronomer for a period of between six months and up to two years.

Studentships may be hosted either at ESO Headquarters in Garching (Germany) or at ESO Offices in Santiago (Chile). Interested applicants are encouraged to watch the special ESOcast Fast Track Your Career with the ESO Studentship Programmes <https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/yQIFCjZ1N7iRLpvJPT7sZtm-dnj?domain=youtube.com> and the video of the Guided Virtual Tour <https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/TAc7Ck81N9t5Vmp01iJtrtGVYBS?domain=youtu.be> of the ESO sites. The tour represents a chance for students interested in the Studentship programme to learn more about the programme and application process, discover the ESO sites and learn more about the life of students at ESO, both in Germany and Chile. A factsheet called ESO Studentship Programme at a glance <https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/Mg1yClx1NjiXJgvKpUYuRtz8cyN?domain=eso.org> is also available. A number of Australian-based PhD students have taken up the opportunity under the Strategic Partnership of an ESO Studentship, and found it enormously beneficial <https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/Zr6sCmO5gluWwErYDtNCOtRLsjl?domain=astronomyaustralia.org.au> to their research and career.

The studentship selection takes place twice per year, in April and October. More details are available at the ESO Studentship Programme webpage <https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/UbarCgZ0N1iGXV7WpU2izt4ZoUx?domain=eso.org> . For information about the application procedure and the required material, please see the ESO recruitment portal <https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/0S9DCnx1jnim0MYLjC0FwtJgtAw?domain=jobs.eso.org> , with separate application forms for studentships in Europe and Chile. The closing date for this second application round is 20 October 2025.
