Hello ASA,

QueersInScience is organising a Symposium for LGBT-STEM day. Attendance at the event is open to all people (allies and LGBT+ people). The talks are intended to be accessible to all levels. We are taking abstracts from any interested LGBT+ researchers (see below). If you are interested in attending you can register your interest at the same link as the abstracts. Please feel free to forward the following info about the event below to people in your research department, group or anyone in your networks that you think might be appropriate (we are especially interested in reaching students).

LGBT-STEMM Day Symposium
The LGBT-STEMM Day Symposium will take place on 18-November 2025 at Swinburne University (in Hawthorn, VIC). The aim is to come together as a community of both LGBT people and allies to provide examples of success within the LGBT community and offer networking opportunities. The symposium will feature talks in which researchers discuss their science and possibly their own journey. We aim to have a spread across both disciplines of STEMM and identifies.

Some of our highlight speakers include (but are not limited to):
Dr Mohammad Taha<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/_h4OC81V0PTYR6kVjunflty49Xn?domain=interacademies.org> – Research Fellow at the Melbourne University – They focus on multidisciplinary science bridging materials science, sustainability, and electronic Engineering

Prof Bob Wong<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/JrjpC91WPRT2BkOymCEhEtqPDBx?domain=monash.edu> - Head, Behavioural Ecology Research Group at Monash – His research focuses on animal behaviour and mating practices.

Dr Karelle Siellez<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/NzvoC0YKPvim3GyO2h2i4t9dQWI?domain=discover.utas.edu.au> – Lecturer at University of Tasmania – They are an internationally recognised for contributions to research in gamma-ray bursts, kilonovae, supernovae, and gravitational waves. (See Karelle’s TED talk here<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/tp02CgZ0N1iG2ABXlT3szt4m4Ya?domain=youtube.com>.)

Dr Sav Zwickl<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/RsjrCjZ1N7iRqnOLjT1tZtmUj30?domain=findanexpert.unimelb.edu.au> - Trans Health Research Fellow at University of Melbourne – Their research focuses on data driven approaches to study the health and wellbeing of transgender people.

Come hear how these, and other researchers, have built their careers in the world of science.

Abstract Submission
We want you tell your story too! We are seeking abstract submissions for talks and posters from LGBT+ researchers across all areas of STEMM and all career levels (undergrad all the way to professor). We will select talks in late October.

If you are interested in keeping informed or wish to submit an abstract you can find more information at the following link:

Special Session on Trans Health & Wellbeing
There will be a special session highlighting research into transgender health & wellbeing. Given current day issues facing this community, we aim to provide information from cutting edge researchers in this area. This will include results from the Trans Health Research Group at University of Melbourne and the MCRI group who has recently been awarded a large grant to lead research in this area.

Trans & Gender Diverse Networking
Due to the growing number of young trans researchers we aim to make a special effort to generate connections from this group. There will be a closed door networking & discussion session for trans and gender diverse people. We are hopeful to connect younger trans researchers with those more senior. We would be very grateful to especially connect with any such people in your centre.

Let me know if you have any questions. Also, feel free to share my contact information with anyone who has questions or wishes to be involved.

Thanks,
Deanne Fisher
