Dear colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that the call for Letters of Intent (LoI) for IAU Scientific Meetings (Symposia and Focus Meetings) to be held in 2027, is now open. LoIs can be submitted using the on-line form available here<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/gRiQCL7EwMfQWwVERHPi5syd3-l?domain=np5meuhbb.cc.rs6.net>, with a deadline of September 15, 2025, 11:59pm CEST (UTC + 2h). Following the LoI submission, the call to submit full proposals will open on September 16, 2025 with a deadline of December 1st, 2025.

As you know, 2027 is the year of the IAU General Assembly (GA)<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/VRY-CMwGxOtzrkDEqHWsLs8IBvV?domain=np5meuhbb.cc.rs6.net>, which will be held in Rome, Italy, from August 10 to August 19. The IAU Executive Committee (EC) expects to approve up to nine 2027 Symposia and 12 Focus Meetings (FMs). All FMs and six of the Symposia will take place during the 2027 GA, at the GA venue<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/7MoMCNLJyQUjWPJv0UrtGsyz2FP?domain=np5meuhbb.cc.rs6.net>. Each of the six GA Symposia (three of which will be held during the first week of the GA, and three during the second), is expected to comprise nine 1.5 hour sessions, plus posters and a plenary. In addition, the EC expects to approve up to 12 more specialized GA FMs, each nominally comprising six 1.5 hour sessions (plus posters). FMs are proposed by groups of scientists with an aim to promote cross-disciplinary interactions while maintaining a well-defined focus on a particular topic. They often address a new scientific area or an emerging field not well, or not at all, represented by the existing IAU Commissions<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/i-uDCOMKzVTv8ZlqpT5uMsGwLqR?domain=np5meuhbb.cc.rs6.net>.

Finally, the EC expects to approve up to three 2027 Symposia not associated with the GA. These are subject to the same requirements as Symposia held in non-GA years, although they should not, if at all possible, be scheduled within three months of the GA. While all GA Symposia (and FMs) must be held in person (with the possibility of having a hybrid option currently being discussed), it is possible (but not required) to request an on-line only format for non-GA Symposia.

Note that submission of an LoI is not mandatory, but it is recommended. All LoIs received by the September 15 deadline will be posted on the IAU website by September 30 to facilitate coordination and collaborations.
