Friday 20 June 2025
The STA Member Update is sent to the leadership of member organisations.
Please forward to your executive and membership.
Dear Stanislav,
Last week we welcomed Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s announcement of a productivity roundtable, bringing together business leaders, unions, and the Government to agree a pathway to increased productivity.
The key to a successful and productive economy is investment in research and development and leaning in to the nation’s science and innovation workforce. That’s going to be increasingly important as Australia transitions to a net-zero economy and we move to tackle the potentially devastating consequences of climate change and the threat to our precious biodiversity. We encourage participants in the roundtable to recognise that research and development creates innovation - a key driver in increasing productivity – and put a strong STEM sector at the heart of decision making at the roundtable.
Another important productivity-boosting activity is increasing and fostering stronger links between universities, businesses and researchers, so we’re delighted that the National Industry PhD Program<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/E7TTCzvkyVC4LZ3pEtKsQh9Dw1t?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com> is once again ramping up ahead of the opening of the next round for applications.
This Department of Education program – delivered by Campus +<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/PwLLCANpgjCEYXg3BUQt2hGfuJV?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com> with Science & Technology Australia – offers generous support for businesses looking to boost their research capability, PhD students looking to work with industry, and universities keen to supercharge their business engagement and create opportunities for their PhD students. Campus + will be hosting a webinar for those interested in the National Industry PhD Program on Thursday 26 June 1pm AEST – register here to join that and find out more about the program<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/tEu1CBNqjlC8or190s1uXh2gYHM?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com>.
Congratulations to all the STEM sector professionals who were recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours, announced last week – it was terrific to see a number of familiar names in there. We’re delighted to see Australia’s exceptional scientists and technologists get public recognition for their outstanding work. We encourage you to nominate a colleague or friend for future awards, which you can do online at the Governor General’s website<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/LtJ5CD1vlpT3Pz1KwtRCkhju9Lp?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com>.
If you’re in Western Australia, also consider nominating for the State Government’s Innovators of the Year Awards. The awards play an important role in celebrating the outstanding contributions of scientists, STEM educators, and research initiatives across the state. We are pleased to see the addition of two new categories this year: an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scientist of the Year, and a Government Science Project of the Year. Applications and nominations close at 10am AWST on Monday 28 July. You can find out more information and apply here<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/Ifq4CE8wmrtpP2mJOuxF8h7CBrS?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com>.
Finally, congratulations to deep-tech startup powerhouse Sally-Ann Williams, who this week announced her intention to step down from Cicada Innovations - an STA Member and an organisation she's led with great success for six years. Sally-Ann finishes with Cicada at the end of July. We wish her continued success and thank her for her outstanding leadership in the sector.
Best Wishes,
Dr Sandra Gardam
Deputy CEO, Science & Technology Australia
