Dear colleagues,
For those interested in galaxy spectral energy distributions, the IAU commission J1 on SEDs organizes a monthly online seminar where invited speakers discuss various SED-related topics. Please see below the announcement for the next one, happening on May 12th. For those who can’t attend live, the talks are recorded and uploaded to Youtube (see details below).
Cheers
Elisabete

Impact of Binary Stars on Spectral Energy Distributions
Zhanwen Han, 韩占文 (Yunnan Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences)
More than half of all stars reside in binary systems, and binary evolution plays a critical role in our understanding of the Universe. Binary interactions are responsible for a variety of astrophysical phenomena, including Type Ia supernovae, double black holes, double neutron stars, heavy-element production, reionization of the Universe, and significant modifications to the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of simple stellar populations (SSPs).
In this talk, I will begin with a brief overview of single star evolution, followed by an introduction to the key binary interaction processes that can dramatically alter stellar fates. I will then present the framework of evolutionary population synthesis and demonstrate how binary evolution influences the SEDs of SSPs across the electromagnetic spectrum—from X-rays to the infrared. Finally, I will discuss how the inclusion of binary interactions affects the physical parameters derived from SED fitting, particularly for studies of old stellar populations using short-wavelength observations, where binary effects must not be neglected.
The talk will be recorded and uploaded to our YouTube Channel:
