Friday 2 May 2025
The STA Member Update is sent to the leadership of member organisations.
Please forward to your executive and membership.
Dear Stanislav,
Sharpen your pencils, set aside the night to spend with Antony Green, and prepare for your democracy sausage - tomorrow the country heads to the polls to decide who will form Australia’s next government.
Much of the campaign has been focused on measures to tackle the cost of living and housing crises, but it has played out against the backdrop of increasing global volatility caused by US President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
Despite these unavoidable national and international headwinds, many of Australia’s political parties and candidates for both the House of Representatives and the Senate have thrown their support behind the economy-boosting measures outlined in STA’s Election Priorities<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/iTKBCxngwOfxxjBG9Cws1fy2ecn?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com>.
The Election Priorities were produced following extensive consultation with STA’s around 150 member organisations, who together represent more than 235,000 STEM professionals. The measures outlined in the STA Election Priorities are the sector’s view on short-, medium-, and long-term steps our country’s policymakers could take to seize the future the country wants and needs – one where our economy is underpinned with much deeper support for research & development, and our best innovators have the tools and funding they need for an Australia built on Australian ideas.
We strongly encourage you to give the Election Priorities<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/MhK0CyojxQTLL3Jj0FNtGfxS7qI?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com> a read, if you haven’t already.
When the election was called we wrote to all the parties and candidates asking them to commit their support for the practical steps towards the country’s future prosperity outlined in the Election Priorities.
We’ve been pleased to see responses from Australia’s political parties and independent candidates coming in over the last couple of weeks. You can read all the responses we’ve had so far here<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/NVqFCzvkyVC44znPxSwuZf9mfdH?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com>.

We are continuing discussions with candidates and parties who have not yet responded, encouraging them to outline their vision for Australian science and technology, and how it aligns with our priorities. We remain hopeful they will provide responses.
Before you cast your vote this weekend, I would strongly encourage you to read over the responses from the parties and candidates – what's in there, or what is missing, may influence your vote.
Finally, the Office of the Chief Scientist recently engaged STA to provide some rapid advice on future processes for planning national research infrastructure. We are keen to hear from members who have engaged in the ARC LEIF and / or the MRFF infrastructure fund or international research infrastructure networks so we can understand the real-life experience of engaging with these. Please email sarah.tynan at sta.org.au<mailto:sarah.tynan at sta.org.au>.
Enjoy your democracy sausages and see you on the other side of the weekend.
All the best,
Ryan Winn
