The STA Member Update is sent to the leadership of member organisations.
Please forward to your executive and membership.
Dear Stanislav,

This week I spoke to ABC’s PM show<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/TZ2SCq71mwf7Vx38MiEsDSELjtL?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com> about new research from the Australian National University<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/JdkxCr81nytDWzY8BHjtWS4Fpgv?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com> which found two thirds of Australians think scientists should actively advocate for specific policies<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/uhBWCvl1rKiyRP57kt5ukSQK5Fx?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com>, and, more importantly, more than 60 per cent think scientists should be more involved in policymaking. This important global study of more than 71,000 people highlights the strong trust Australians have in science and scientists, and that people understand the crucial importance of using that science to inform and guide policy-making. If nothing else does, that should convince us all of the importance of Science Meets Parliament and science communication in general.

The imminent Federal election provides an opportunity to bolster this science and policy interaction, as well as powerfully leverage science and the nation’s scientists to fuel policy and future jobs. STA’s comprehensive suite of election asks<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/XPd_CwV1vMfR24mGwFxCPSJwvyX?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com> would secure the nation’s economy, shore up our nation’s research sector, and protect our precious environment now and into the future – creating an economy powered by Australian ingenuity. We will continue to advocate for the economy-boosting measures in STA’s Federal Election Priorities<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/uSUdCxngwOfQzgV1WSgFgSyrPOH?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com> as the country prepares to go to the polls.

One great way of ensuring that science is forefront of minds for the nation’s decision-makers is Science Meets Parliament 2025, which takes place on 12 and 13 February. If you haven’t yet secured your spot for this career-enhancing event, now is the time to do so<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/ImkKCyojxQTypQwrBtxHySxQWf4?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com>. Over two days you will get outstanding professional development, unparalleled networking opportunities, and the chance to talk directly to politicians about the importance of your science. We’ve got a brilliant line of global STEM superstars as speakers, so grab your spot here<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/jEofCzvkyVCm7yZMjH7IoS9-n1b?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com> to make sure you don’t miss out.

Last week we were delighted to welcome the announcement of Professor Ute Roessner<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/M04kCANpgjC18PXNDCwS5SGHnoa?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com> as the new CEO of the Australian Research Council. Professor Roessner brings strong leadership skills and a distinguished research career to this crucial role. We congratulate her on her appointment to this vital role for Australian research, and look forward to working closely with her as she leads the ARC.

The next round of applications for the National Industry PhD program will open soon, so now is the time to submit an EOI<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/ssgECBNqjlClykr7LCpTmS2_vhT?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com>. This game-changing program – delivered by Campus Plus in partnership with us here at STA and STA member organisation Cruxes Innovation – is turbo-charging collaboration between industry, research and PhD scholars. Want to find out more? Join the upcoming information webinar<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/IdL4CD1vlpTOyWz58U6UzSj4d2s?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com> on Thursday 30 January to get your questions answered.

Finally, we’ve been delighted to welcome a raft of new STA members over the last couple of months. STA member organisations now include the University of Melbourne Commercialisation (UMC), University of Adelaide Environment Institute, Academy for Collaborative Research Infrastructure (ACRI), ARC Centre of Excellence in Optical Microcombs for Breakthrough Science (COMBS), and the Australian Catholic University (ACU) - Major External Programs (Government). From Curtin University we welcome several members, the Resources Technology & Critical Minerals Trailblazer, Faculty of Health Science, Faculty of Science & Engineering, and the University’s Research Office. We now have 140 members from across the sector who between them represent more than 225,000 STEM professionals. Being a member of STA comes with significant benefits, but also means that we can more powerfully advocate on behalf of the membership. We thank the new member organisations for joining the STA family and look forward to working with them.

All the best,
Ryan Winn
