Friday 5 December 2024
The STA Member Update is sent to the leadership of member organisations.
Please forward to your executive and membership.
Dear Stanislav,
Phew! The end of the year may be in sight, but there’s been no slow-down yet in things happening in the sector.
This week we welcomed the Terms of Reference and panel<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/MIMsCnx1jni6QEZlRsZs9IJ--Lp?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com> being announced for the Strategic Examination of R&D by the Minister for Education Jason Clare and Minister for Industry and Science Ed Husic. The review has been long in the making – it was announced in March this year – and will report at the end of 2025. The expert panel will be led by Robyn Denholm as Chair, working with Professor Ian Chubb, Professor Fiona Wood, and Dr Kate Cornick. Together, they bring together diverse expertise to the table. As the voice of 235,000 STEM professionals, we look forward to working closely with them to provide input and knowledge from research translation leaders as well as ensuring diverse perspectives. We will be encouraging the panel to take an ambitious approach to the scope of their work, looking at incentives driving R&D output, outcomes, and activity, including how they differ across small, medium and large businesses and industry sectors. We will also push them to look at the opportunities across the entire sector, from discovery research all the way through to deep-tech start-ups. We will soon be reaching out to member organisations to get their input to help formulate our response to the Terms of Reference – our thanks in advance for your expertise and insights as we respond to this critical review.
Hot on the heels of the review, we released our 2025 Election Priorities<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/85_wCoV1kpfKJnVlyiOtDIpMvmg?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com> – a comprehensive suite of policy measures developed in consultation with member organisations. Among the 40 plus measures detailed in the document, we’ve called for a new Innovation Future Fund, a multi-billion-dollar Strategic Moonshot Program, and a robust strategy to increase Australia’s research and development investment to 3% of GDP. With an economy languishing, a cost-of-living crisis, and a pathway to prosperity uncertain, the 2025 Federal Election is where we need our elected representatives to make the crucial decisions to create the future Australia wants and needs – a technologically-advanced, healthy, and resilient nation, and one driven by innovation and smart thinking in which all Australians can flourish. But seizing that future means taking bold action now. In the lead up to next year’s Federal Election, we will invite all candidates and parties to commit to this ambitious and essential vision for building a prosperous Australia and report back to you with their responses. We encourage you take a look at the 2025 Election Priorities<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/c2DNCp81lrtxP20QRc2uVIGJ9yD?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com>, share the document with colleagues, and back the measures in it with your own advocacy wherever you can.
Last week we put on a Parliamentary Friends of Science<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/1hMqCq71mwf7GQyLMUqCAIEppdu?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com> event exploring the STEM research, ideas and innovation our research sector has to drive Australia’s future economy. The event heard from multi-award-winning electronics engineer and innovator Professor Madhu Bhaskaran, pharmaceutical industry leader Anne Harris of Pfizer, electrical engineer and founding director of Alinga Energy Consulting Ruby Heard of the Jaru people of the Kimberley, and Chief Defence Scientist Professor Tanya Monro.
This event also marked the final Parliamentary Friends of Science the Hon Karen Andrews MP will attend as co-chair and as a sitting member of Parliament, as she will not contest the next election. This longstanding Friendship group was launched in September 2012 by Karen Andrews and Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles and the two of them have co-chaired the group ever since.
We offer our deep thanks to Karen for her incredible commitment and solid support of science and innovation through the years. Her work has helped to ensure scientific evidence and expertise is known and heard in the halls of power and shared with Parliamentarians through this non-partisan group. We also thank her for her lifelong efforts to champion STEM, including as an engineer, in her participation at STA’s Science Meets Parliament events, in her role as a former Minister for Science, and as a mentor for STA’s Superstars of STEM program.
We also paid tribute last week to outgoing Chief Scientist Dr Cathy Foley<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/gZn-Cr81nytDXqRwBHQFQI4foUC?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com> whose term is coming to a close. Over her four-year term as Chief Scientist, Dr Foley has worked tirelessly to develop emerging technologies such as quantum, advocated powerfully for better research metrics, and championed Indigenous Knowledge systems and women in STEM. Without a doubt, Cathy is one of the most passionate advocates for science this country has ever had, and it has been a privilege and a pleasure to work closely with her in the role.
Finally, time is running out to grab your generous early bird discount price for next year’s Science Meets Parliament. The event will run 12-13 February in Canberra and will bring together a galaxy of the leading lights in STEM and policymaking. It’s a career-defining event and one that you won’t want to miss. Register for Science Meets Parliament<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/hQ6ICvl1rKiyo9nOkUwH0IQdLjj?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com> before Friday 13 December to take your place at the event at an absolute bargain price.
All the best,
Ryan Winn
