Dear colleagues:

[apologies if you receive this more than once and please forward to other people who may be interested]

The Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) at The Australian National University (ANU) is inviting students to apply for the RSAA PhD program including scholarships <https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/-RhtC6XQ4LfV2o9qBfpfNC5Nhwx?domain=rsaa.anu.edu.au> to commence in 2025. Applications from Domestic Students are invited through the ANU Application Manager <https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/JRazC71R2NTE5m6wJsWh0CoBH6h?domain=aus01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com>, by 31 October 2024. Applications from International Students are invited through the RSAA International PhD Application Process <https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/tTjmC81V0PTOVjMEKF2iECy0Kfs?domain=rsaa.anu.edu.au>, by 30 November 2024.

RSAA is one of Australia's largest astronomy research institutes, with approximately 20 faculty, 20 postdoctoral researchers, 40 instrument scientists and engineers, and 50 PhD students, focussing on a broad range of astronomical research in radio astronomy, optical astronomy, astrophysical simulations and instrumentation. RSAA operates Australia’s largest optical observatory at Siding Spring and the Advanced Instrumentation and Technology Centre. Our astronomers have won the Nobel Prize, the Prime Minister's Science Prize, and are Laureate, Future and DECRA Fellows of the Australian Research Council, and Fellows of the Australian Academy of Science. Our graduating students are regularly awarded prestigious fellowships including Fulbright, ESO, and Hubble fellowships.

The Australian National University is located in Canberra, the capital city of Australia, with plenty of nature reserves, parkland, walking/bike trails, and a vibrant city centre. The Research School for Astronomy & Astrophysics is located on top of the beautiful Mount Stromlo, within the Stromlo Forest Park.

Our mission is to:
Train outstanding young scientists to lead ground-breaking research projects in astronomy, astrophysics, and instrumentation.
Advance the observational and theoretical frontiers of astronomy and astrophysics, and their enabling technologies.
Provide national and international scientific leadership.
PhD research projects on offer are at the cutting-edge of astrophysics and instrumentation science, including observational and theoretical projects that cover a wide range of subjects, and involve world-class observational and supercomputing facilities. Please refer to our researchers <https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/lFT5C91WPRTRymKDpSOs9CqBepg?domain=aus01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com> and projects <https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/canTC0YKPviJO2WpLHOtYC9IEGp?domain=aus01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com> pages to get an idea of the breadth of research conducted at RSAA and to get in touch with potential PhD supervisors.

ANU values diversity and inclusion and is committed to providing equal opportunities to those of all backgrounds, identities, and protected attributes. We welcome and encourage applications from minorities and underrepresented groups, affirming our commitment to fostering a richly diverse and equitable community.

Please contact the Associate Director HDR Christoph Federrath (christoph.federrath at anu.edu.au <mailto:christoph.federrath at anu.edu.au>) or the Senior Student Administrator Sam Slater (rsaa.sa at anu.edu.au <mailto:rsaa.sa at anu.edu.au>) for further information about the RSAA PhD program and the application process.

Best regards,
Christoph
