Dear ASA members,
On behalf of ESO and the Department of Industry, Science and Resources we
would be grateful if you could bring these outstanding opportunities enabled
through Australia's Strategic Partnership with ESO to the attention of
eligible ECRs.

ESO's prestigious

ew/fellowship_programme.html> postdoctoral fellowship programme in both
Garching (Germany) and Santiago (Chile) offers outstanding early-career
scientists the opportunity to further develop their independent research
programmes. Located in one of the most active research centres in Europe,
the three-year long Garching fellowship offers plenty of opportunities to
start new collaborations. Fellows are expected to engage in functional work
for up to 25% of their time, equipping them with essential professional
skills in diverse areas. Fellows in Chile, on the other hand, interact with
visiting astronomers from all areas of research and can easily collaborate
with the Chilean astronomical community or with astronomers at other
international observatories in the country. ESO Fellows in Chile contribute
at a level of 80 nights per year during the first three years, while the
fourth year is dedicated exclusively to scientific research at an
astronomy/astrophysics institute in an ESO member state, Chile, or
Australia. Recruitment preference will be given to nationals of ESO-member
countries as well as Australia and Chile. The closing date for the 2025
fellowships is 15 October 2024.
ESO Studentship Programme 2025

The ESO research studentship programme is open to students enrolled in a PhD
programme in astronomy or related fields, enabling them to continue their
doctoral research under the formal supervision of their home university, but
with the added benefit of spending a minimum of six months (Chile) or one
year (Germany), and up to two years at ESO, working closely with a dedicated
ESO staff astronomer. The selection process happens twice a year, in April
and October. The closing date for this application round is 20 October 2024.
La Silla Observing School 2025

The next La Silla Observing School will be held from 10-21 February 2025 at
the ESO premises in Santiago de Chile and at the La Silla Observatory.
During two weeks students will have a hands-on real-life experience on the
full cycle from observation planning, observing with professional telescopes
(NTT and 3.6m telescope at the La Silla Observatory) and the data reduction
and analysis afterwards. ESO covers all costs within Chile. The registration
deadline is 30th September 2024.
MUSE Data Challenge

In advance of the meeting A decade of discoveries with MUSE and beyond
<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/h0Z_CxngwOfmgp0YjIWuxCyPA_V?domain=eso.org> ESO is running the MUSE
Data Challenge, which aims to share information, strategies, and best
practices for mitigating the issues of sky subtraction and flat fielding
with the wider community. ESO will provide a set of raw MUSE science
observations and associated calibrations to any interested team or
individual and ask that they apply their ideas to mitigate a given problem.
Final data products need to be submitted to ESO by 18 October 2024.
