To those interested to gain practical experience in observing with the KOALA instrument at the AAT,

FINAL CALL FOR INSTRUMENT TRAINING. Closing date is May 20th.

DATE CHANGE FOR DATA REDUCTION TRAINING. DR training will now be held on June 12th so it will not clash with the ASTRO-3D conference.

The AAT is offering a training session using the KOALA instrument on Monday 27 May 2024. The training will go through the instrument setup and will follow with observations of targets selected by participants.

The training is being provided by the AAT free of charge.

The training will start at 3pm AEST (UTC+10).

The instructor (Ángel Lopez-Sanchez) will take the participants through some rules of thumb for target selection and framing, the process of setting up KOALA for a night’s observing and taking the appropriate calibration frames before the night. The group will re-meet 30min before the astronomical twilight to familiarise with the optimised procedure for observing with KOALA at night including taking skyflats for throughput correction, focusing the telescope, observing spectroscopic calibration stars, how to perform the ditherings, and apply offsets skies. Observations will go on for ~3 hours or so if weather is good. Targets selected by the participants will be used for the training of acquiring and taking science frames.
The training is planned to be finished by midnight.

To attend, please ensure you:

  *   RSVP to AATscheduler at mso.anu.edu.au<mailto:AATscheduler at mso.anu.edu.au> by 20 May 2024
  * Send a selection of targets (with coordinates) that you would like to observe to Angel Rafael Lopez Sanchez (angel.lopez-sanchez at mq.edu.au<mailto:angel.lopez-sanchez at mq.edu.au>) by 20 May 2024.
  * Complete the SSO Visitor Form<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/JwSBCzvkyVC8xGKGyh4Jbpw?domain=aat.anu.edu.au>
  * read the KOALA Manual<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/GRzwCANpgjCrnZjZPf8ViNJ?domain=aat.anu.edu.au> before the training.

OR
Can attend at the AAT.

If you wish to continue observing after the end of the training, please let me know so that it can be organised.

There will be a separate Koala Data Reduction Training Session on Friday the 12th of June from 2pm till 4pm AEST. If you would like to join, please RSVP to AATscheduler at mso.anu.edu.au<mailto:AATscheduler at mso.anu.edu.au> and cc Angel Rafael Lopez Sanchez (angel.lopez-sanchez at mq.edu.au<mailto:angel.lopez-sanchez at mq.edu.au>) by Friday the 5th of June.

There is also a training session planned for Veloce to be held on Tuesday 16 July 2024. An announcement will be made in the next few weeks.
