Dear ASA members,

Please see below for an update from STA.

Members may wish to note that the ARC College of Experts call explicitly lists Astronomical Sciences (FoR 5101) as an area of “high priority”, i.e. where expertise is required. I would therefore encourage suitable members of the community to consider putting themselves forward.

Best wishes,

Stas

The STA Member Update is sent to the leadership of member organisations.
Please forward to your executive and membership.
Dear Stanislav,

Last week on behalf of our members we welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement about creating a Future Made in Australia Act<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/LQNDCBNqjlCPlEjn8fjmweS?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com>. This proposal has the potential to spur investment in clean energy technologies and secure economic benefits from the opportunities arising from the clean energy transformation. However, getting there will require significant, strategic investments in R&D and innovation, so we again reinforced the crucial importance of a pathway to lift national R&D investment to 3% of GDP. Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve been delighted to provide communications support to our member organisation, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Mathematics Alliance (ATSIMA), led by Quandamooka mathematician Professor Chris Matthews. ATSIMA and the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT) recently convened the National Summit on Indigenous Students and Mathematics Education in Adelaide. The Summit brought together the country’s education leaders to develop a commitment statement to hold education systems accountable for the mathematics outcomes of Indigenous students and put together an action plan to drive meaningful change to close the gap in maths education achievement between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. We applaud the outstanding leadership shown by ATSIMA and AAMT in convening the event to address this pressing problem, and it was terrific to see the Summit covered by ABC News Breakfast, The Educator<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/tuSNCE8wmrt16RLqpsQxsCX?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com>, and other media outlets.

Nominations are open now for the Australian Research Council College of Experts<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/ZHoGCGv0oyCWLjk8AF1yKXt?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com>. ARC College of Experts members are drawn directly from the Australian research community, which includes higher education, industry and public sector research organisations. It’s an exceptional opportunity to support the advancement of knowledge and contribute to national innovation. More information for potential nominees<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/1j6DCJyBrGfpQ0ZnKIyfZJ9?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com> is available online. Nominations close Monday 3 June.

Many thanks to the member organisations that have given us input on our upcoming submission to the Select Committee on Adopting Artificial Intelligence. If you would like to contribute to our thinking on that submission, please reach out to us asap, email Hari Konchada<mailto:hari.konchada at sta.org.au?subject=Adopting%20Artificial%20Intelligence%20Submission&body=Hi%2C%0A%0AI%20would%20like%20to%20contribute%20to%20this%20submission.>. The ARC is currently reviewing the National Competitive Grants Program, its core mechanism to administer research funding, including the Discovery and Linkage programs. We will soon be seeking input from member organisations on our submission. Finally, the Climate Change Authority is conducting a public consultation on its 2024 Issues Paper: Targets, Pathways and Progress<https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/L9NnCK1DvKT8r3O14u2SxGx?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.us9.list-manage.com>. STA is preparing a submission to the consultation. We would be grateful for any expert input that members can provide. Please contact Mike Teece<mailto:mike.teece at sta.org.au?subject=2024%20Issues%20Paper%3A%20Targets%2C%20Pathways%20and%20Progress%20Consultation&body=Hi%2C%0A%0AI%20would%20like%20to%20contribute%20to%20this%20consultation.> by Tuesday 7 May.

Until next time,

Sandra Gardam
