Hi All,

We are happy to announce the “Scientific Landscape for Extremely Large Telescopes in Light of JWST, Part II: Asia”, a.k.a, “ELT Science Conference in Asia 2024” to be held in Sendai, Japan. Everybody is more than welcome to join the Conference and to share any plan for sciences with ELTs and space telescopes currently operational and/or under planning. Hope to see you all in Sendai!

The Scientific Landscape for Extremely Large Telescopes in Light of JWST. Part II. Asia
Date: 2024 June 3 - 7
Venue: Tohoku University, Katahira Campus, Katahira Sakura Hall

Scientific Rationale
The Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs) will be the premier ground-based optical-infrared facilities from the 2030s onward. These telescopes will provide diffraction-limited spatial resolution, unrivaled from the ground or space, as well as sensitivity commensurate with their large apertures. The experience of the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes coupled with ground based 8-10m telescopes demonstrates the power of combining these capabilities to carry out unprecedented, complementary, and even unexpected science. The recent breakthroughs brought by JWST are no exceptions, and we expect to see many more exciting developments in coming decades through multiple future space missions that many institutes in the Asia and Pacific region are leading and participating in. The upcoming ELTs will be the ideal complement to such space missions as well as JWST. The goal of this series of conferences is to review and highlight recent JWST discoveries and study their implications for the science operations of ELTs and planning of their instrumentation and user services. This is also an excellent opportunity to study the strategic synergies between the ELTs and future space missions. The conferences will cover all areas of astronomy and are open to observers, instrument builders, and theorists. In order to maximize participation and minimize travel time and carbon footprint, the series of conferences will consist of three coordinated events. This will be the second event, to be held at Tohoku University in Japan, after the first conference in UCLA in the US. The third one will be held in Europe.
